CISA published advisory ICSMA-18-277-02 on October 4, 2018, covering one vulnerability in the Change Healthcare PeerVue Web Server, versions before 7.6.2. Dan Regalado of Zingbox reported it.
CVE-2018-10624 is generation of an error message containing sensitive information (CWE-209), with a CVSS v3 base score of 4.3. Improper error handling in HTTP-based communications with the server can hand an attacker technical information about the system. The vector requires adjacent network access and no privileges, and the impact is limited to low confidentiality.
A verbose error is reconnaissance. Stack traces, component names and version strings tell an attacker which known flaws to try next, which is why CISA's risk evaluation frames the issue as information that lets an attacker target a system for attack.
Change Healthcare released a patch, and CISA described the company as very responsive in mitigating the issue. Users get the patch through the Change Healthcare support team. Production servers should return generic errors and keep the detail in their own logs.
