CISA published advisory ICSMA-23-285-02 on October 12, 2023, for Santesoft Sante FFT Imaging, versions 1.4.0 and earlier. Michael Heinzl reported CVE-2023-5059, an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) with a CVSS v3 base score of 7.8.

The application does not properly validate user-supplied data when it parses DICOM files. A crafted file can trigger the out-of-bounds read, and CISA says an attacker could use it to disclose information and execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. The vector is local and needs the user to open the file.

DICOM files move between sites on discs, USB drives and email attachments as a matter of routine. That makes opening a file from outside an everyday act for a radiology reader, and it is the only interaction this exploit needs.

Santesoft released Sante FFT Imaging 1.4.1 and recommends updating. Parsers that read attacker-supplied images should be fuzzed before every release, because the image format is the attack surface.
