Medtronic superDimension navigation system runs on unsupported Windows versions

Medtronic published a bulletin on January 19, 2023 on the superDimension navigation system. The system runs on Microsoft Windows platforms that Microsoft no longer supports, creating vulnerabilities that could allow an unauthorized user to execute code on the system.

Affected are the V7 family navigation system and planning station (procedure software 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2; planning software 7.0.3, 7.0.4 and 7.1) and the navigation system V61 and earlier.

An unsupported operating system stops receiving fixes, so every Windows flaw published after end of support stays open on the device. Compensating network controls carry the whole load until the platform is replaced.

Identify affected systems. Record which superDimension navigation systems and planning stations run V7 family or V61 and earlier software.
Isolate the platform. Keep the navigation system and planning station off general hospital networks and control removable media.
Plan the upgrade. Work with Medtronic on a supported software or hardware path and budget for it.

The flaw is in the OS inside the controller, or a system past end of service still in the field. As the maker, own the embedded OS and server lifecycle as a safety obligation, design controllers to update in the field, and make every fault degrade to a defined safe state.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
Degrade to safe. A fault drives a defined safe state, never an unexpected stop on a life-sustaining device.
