ZOLL tells Defibrillator Dashboard users to upgrade to 2.2 and retire 1.x

ZOLL notified customers in October 2020 of vulnerabilities in Defibrillator Dashboard 2.1 and earlier, corrected in version 2.2. A 2021 follow-up notice repeated the upgrade instructions and said CISA would publish the information on June 8, 2021.

A separate ZOLL letter states that Defibrillator Dashboard 1.x runs on older platforms with security vulnerabilities and is end of life. Those installs get no fix, only replacement. A fleet tool that tracks defibrillator readiness is worth keeping current.

Upgrade Defibrillator Dashboard 2.1 and earlier to version 2.2. Replace any Defibrillator Dashboard 1.x install, which ZOLL has declared end of life on older platforms with security vulnerabilities.

Upgrade to 2.2. Move every Defibrillator Dashboard 2.1 or earlier install to 2.2 following ZOLL's instructions.
Retire 1.x. Decommission Defibrillator Dashboard 1.x and migrate its data.
Limit access meanwhile. Restrict network access to Dashboard hosts until the upgrade is complete.

The flaw is in the OS inside the controller, or a system past end of service still in the field. As the maker, own the embedded OS and server lifecycle as a safety obligation, design controllers to update in the field, and make every fault degrade to a defined safe state.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
Degrade to safe. A fault drives a defined safe state, never an unexpected stop on a life-sustaining device.
