Philips issued an advisory on November 9, 2021 on its MRI 1.5T and MRI 3T systems, versions 5.3 through 5.8.1. The company identified three potential vulnerabilities: improper access control, incorrect ownership assignment for resources, and potential exposure of sensitive information to unauthorized actors.
On an MRI console, incorrect ownership means files or processes owned by the wrong account, which lets a lower-privileged user change what a higher-privileged one runs. Sensitive information on a scanner usually means patient studies.
Scanner consoles are shared logins in practice. The access control fix only works if the accounts on top of it are individual.
