Philips listed Flex Cardio, XperIM and SensaVue on June 30, 2022, as related to CVE-2022-30190, the critical remote code execution flaw in the Windows Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) known as Follina.

Successful execution could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code with privileges and take control of the system. Follina fires from a crafted document that calls the MSDT handler, so any clinical workstation used for email or document handling is in range.

Workstations that open documents from outside the hospital carry this exposure. Strip that use off the device wherever the workflow allows it.

Apply Microsoft's CVE-2022-30190 fix to Flex Cardio, XperIM and SensaVue hosts as Philips validates it. Until then, apply Microsoft's MSDT workaround where Philips supports it and keep document handling off the systems.

Patch through Philips. Install the Windows update for CVE-2022-30190 on the listed products once Philips validates it.
Apply the workaround. Disable the MSDT URL protocol where Philips confirms it does not affect clinical function.
Keep documents off the device. Stop using the clinical workstations to open email attachments or downloaded documents.

The flaw is in the OS inside the controller, or a system past end of service still in the field. As the maker, own the embedded OS and server lifecycle as a safety obligation, design controllers to update in the field, and make every fault degrade to a defined safe state.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
Degrade to safe. A fault drives a defined safe state, never an unexpected stop on a life-sustaining device.
