Fujifilm approves Microsoft Meltdown and Spectre patches for Synapse PACS and RIS

Fujifilm Healthcare published a Meltdown and Spectre statement on February 12, 2018. It had tested and approved Microsoft patches KB4056892, KB4056898 and KB4056897 for Synapse PACS, Synapse Cardiovascular and Synapse RIS, while evaluating further impacts.

Fujifilm also notes that virtualization platforms will need updates. PACS and RIS servers mostly run as virtual machines, and a guest patch does nothing about a neighbor reading memory through an unpatched hypervisor, so the host fix is the one to schedule first.

Apply the Fujifilm approved Microsoft patches KB4056892, KB4056898 and KB4056897 to Synapse PACS, Synapse Cardiovascular and Synapse RIS servers. Update the virtualization hosts as well, since Fujifilm notes they also need fixes.

Apply approved patches. Install KB4056892, KB4056898 or KB4056897 as matched to each Synapse server's Windows version.
Patch the hypervisors. Update the virtualization platform hosting Synapse servers with the vendor's speculative execution fixes.
Check performance. Watch Synapse response times after patching and raise regressions with Fujifilm.

The flaw is in the OS inside the controller, or a system past end of service still in the field. As the maker, own the embedded OS and server lifecycle as a safety obligation, design controllers to update in the field, and make every fault degrade to a defined safe state.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
Degrade to safe. A fault drives a defined safe state, never an unexpected stop on a life-sustaining device.
