DePuy Synthes tells Brainlab KICK users to verify MS17-010 against WannaCry and Petya

DePuy Synthes, a Johnson & Johnson company, issued an awareness bulletin on July 18, 2017 for the Brainlab KICK computer assisted surgery system it distributes. The KICK System may be exposed to ransomware such as WannaCry or Petya if connected via Ethernet.

Customers should verify that Microsoft patch MS17-010, KB4012212 or KB4012215, is installed. A navigation system that gets encrypted mid-case stops the surgery it is guiding. Unplug the Ethernet cable if the patch is not confirmed.

Verify MS17-010. Check each KICK System for KB4012212 or KB4012215.
Disconnect if unpatched. Keep unpatched KICK Systems off Ethernet.
Block SMB. Deny TCP 445 to operating room navigation systems from the wider network.

The flaw is in the OS inside the controller, or a system past end of service still in the field. As the maker, own the embedded OS and server lifecycle as a safety obligation, design controllers to update in the field, and make every fault degrade to a defined safe state.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
Degrade to safe. A fault drives a defined safe state, never an unexpected stop on a life-sustaining device.
