Canon Medical's security information page on the Microsoft Message Queuing vulnerability, CVE-2023-21554, was last updated on June 9, 2025. It lists UL (ultrasound) and MR medical imaging products as affected. The flaw is a remote code execution bug scored CVSS 9.8, and it applies to systems with MSMQ enabled and TCP port 1801 open.

The fix is the Microsoft 2023-04 or later cumulative update, applied according to Canon's patch lists. Port 1801 has no reason to be reachable from outside the modality's own network, so close it there whatever the patch status.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
Degrade to safe. A fault drives a defined safe state, never an unexpected stop on a life-sustaining device.
