Biosense Webster published an updated statement on November 23, 2022 on the Microsoft PrintNightmare vulnerability, CVE-2021-34527. CARTO 3 Versions 6 and 7.1 run Windows with the vulnerable Print Spool service enabled.

Affected builds are V6.0.70.100, V6.0.70.211, V6.0.80.45, V6.0.80.122 and V7.1.80.33. Biosense Webster released Security Service Pack 4 (KT-0001-17/U) with the fix.

A mapping workstation rarely needs to print anything. Services the clinical workflow does not use should be off by default, and the Print Spooler is the textbook case.

Install Security Service Pack 4 (KT-0001-17/U) on CARTO 3 V6.0.70.100, V6.0.70.211, V6.0.80.45, V6.0.80.122 and V7.1.80.33 to fix CVE-2021-34527.

Install SSP 4. Apply Security Service Pack 4 (KT-0001-17/U) to each affected CARTO 3 system.
Verify the spooler state. Confirm after installation that the Print Spool exposure is closed.
Limit network reach. Keep CARTO 3 workstations on a segment that only reaches required clinical systems.

The flaw is in the OS inside the controller, or a system past end of service still in the field. As the maker, own the embedded OS and server lifecycle as a safety obligation, design controllers to update in the field, and make every fault degrade to a defined safe state.

Own the OS lifecycle. Patch the OS and server components on a schedule with a tested delivery path.
Design for field update. And for planned replacement, so an unpatchable unit has a path off the network.
